What is an API key?

Think of an API key as a specialized access code that lets your software safely interact with Layer4's services. By assigning a different key to each part of your system (like different applications or different areas within your technical setup), you enhance security and organization.

You can specify expiration dates for these keys, up to a maximum of one year. This means an API key will automatically become invalid after the period you specify, adding an extra layer of security. However, even with this feature, it's recommended to change your API keys more frequently than their expiration dates. Regularly updating these keys – a process known as key rotation – greatly reduces the risk of unauthorized access, ensuring that your connection to Layer4 remains secure. This practice is akin to regularly updating your passwords for better security.
