Downloading Your Private Keys
Your private keys are crucial for maintaining control over your wallet and its assets. This guide explains how to safely download and store your wallet's private keys.
Your private keys provide complete access to your wallet and all assets within it. Anyone with access to these keys can:
- Transfer all your tokens and NFTs
- Sign transactions on your behalf
- Take irreversible actions with your assets
Never share your private keys with anyone. Layer4 staff will never ask for your private keys.
Before You Begin
Ensure you have:
- Access to your email account
- A secure location to store the downloaded keys
- A plan for backing up the keys securely
Download Process
- Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner
- Select "Manage Profile"
- Click the "Download Private Keys" button
- Check your email for a 6-digit OTP (one-time password)
- Enter the OTP in the verification dialog
- Once verified, your keys will download in JSON format
The OTP verification is required every time you attempt to download your private keys, even within the same session.
Security Best Practices
Storing Your Keys
- Store the JSON file in a secure, encrypted location
- Consider using a password manager or hardware security key
- Create multiple secure backups in different physical locations
- Never store your keys in plain text or cloud storage
- Never share your keys via email or messaging apps
Additional Security Tips
- Enable two-factor authentication for your Layer4 account
- Regularly verify your backup copies are accessible
- Consider using a hardware wallet for large holdings
- Monitor your wallet activity regularly
Important Notes
Private keys CANNOT be recovered if:
- You lose access to them
- They are overwritten by a new wallet
- Your account is deleted
Always ensure you have secure backups before taking any action that might affect your wallet.
